Step-by-step: a garden-style vase arrangement
A loose, gathered arrangement in a vase, using a simple tape grid or reusable support instead of floral foam.

You'll need
- Vase or footed bowl, about 6–8 in (15–20 cm) across
- Clear waterproof floral tape or a reusable flower frog / chicken-wire ball
- Conditioned flowers (see recipe)
- Snips
01Recipe: centerpiece
About 30–35 stems for an 8 in (20 cm) footed bowl.
| Role | Stems | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Foliage base | 8–10 | Two types of foliage of different textures |
| Focal | 5 | Dahlias, peonies or garden roses |
| Supporting | 7 | Zinnias, ranunculus or spray roses |
| Airy filler | 7 | Cosmos, scabiosa or grasses |
| Trailing accent | 3 | Jasmine vine, clematis or a trailing foliage |
02Method
- 1.Make a support: a tape grid across the mouth of the dry vase (three strips each way), or a frog or loose chicken-wire ball in the bottom.
- 2.Fill with cool water.
- 3.Build an asymmetric foliage outline: longer pieces on one side, shorter on the other, some reaching over the rim.
- 4.Place focal flowers in a loose triangle at different heights, slightly off center. Turn some to face sideways.
- 5.Fill gaps with supporting flowers, grouping two or three of a kind rather than dotting them evenly.
- 6.Add airy filler last so it floats above the main shape, and let a trailing stem spill over the edge.
- 7.Turn the vase and check every side; remove anything that crowds the shape.
TipLeaving small gaps lets each flower be seen. Garden-style arrangements look best slightly undone.
03Care and safety
- —Top up water daily; refresh it every two days and recut stems.
- —Some common flowers and foliage are toxic to pets — lilies are dangerous to cats. Check plants before placing them where animals can reach.
- —Wear gloves for roses and for plants with irritating sap (such as euphorbia).
